(AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-15 14:59 GMT: Metals - Copper falls on rising supply, weak demand; Chile quake damage unclear
LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Copper fell as rising inventory, weak demand and uncertainty in equity markets outweighed possible supply disruptions from a recent earthquake in Chile. The red metal's price rose to its highest level in over a week yesterday as traders fretted Chile's most powerful earthquake since 2004 might disrupt supply. Chile accounts for 35 pct of global supply. Yesterday copper hit 7,386 usd a tonne in intraday trades, its highest price in over a week. At 2.34 pm, LME copper for 3-month delivery was down at 6,970 usd a tonne against 7,130 usd at the close yesterday. Market opinion as to how serious the earthquake was, in terms of squeezing supply, was divided. "The overall situation remains very unclear as mining companies assess the damage and it is likely to take several days for power to be restored," said Robin Bhar, UBS analyst.

MANILA (Thomson Financial) - Rates on Philippine benchmark Treasury bills fell across the board at a government auction Monday after the auction committee rejected high bids ahead of the release of its fiscal report tomorrow, the Bureau of Treasury said. The treasury bureau accepted 3.29 billion pesos worth of bids out of the 6.0 billion pesos it offered. Tenders totaled 9.675 billion pesos. The yield on the 91-day Treasury bill, which banks use in pricing loans, slipped to 3.672 percent from 3.700 percent at the last auction on Nov 5. The 182-day T-bill rate dropped to 4.692 percent from 4.707 percent previously. The 364-day T-bill rate fell to 5.567 percent from 5.628 percent. The high offers caught the government by surprise. The rates would have gone up had the auction committee made a full award of the offer.

Singh and other FPL employees who complete programs to quit smoking are rewarded with $100 in their health reimbursement accounts, which they can use for doctor visits and prescriptions, plus an extra $75 in their paycheck that year. FPL employees also can get cash rewards for completing Weight Watchers and exercise programs. .
(AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-20 22:54 GMT: Treasurys mixed; Fed sees tame inflation
NEW YORK (AP) - Treasury prices closed mixed Tuesday, drawing some support from a benign Federal Reserve forecast for 2008, but with gains limited by growing credit worries and light volume ahead of Thanksgiving. A new Fed economic outlook, the first in a quarterly series, predicted tame inflation and slow growth in 2008, a nearly ideal combination for the government bond market. Benign inflation would protect the value of fixed-income assets and remove the rationale for the Fed keeping rates higher. The fact the Fed also foresees growth in the 1.8 percent to 2.5 percent range in 2008, slower than previously thought, gives a motive for cutting rates. The Fed separately released minutes from its Oct. 31 monetary policy meeting that showed that some of its monetary policy committee members considered market conditions "still fragile," and were more worried about weak growth than inflation.
Porn ruse shows Macs' exposure to online crooks is up
Online criminals must be impressed Apple's sky-rocketing sales - they've started sending Macintosh computers an attack typically aimed at machines running Microsoft Windows operating system. Researchers say the Web sites serving up the new attack deploy a Windows and Mac version. Apple officials say they know about the threat and encourage Mac users to be careful about what they download. The ploy is aimed at online porn-hunters. Visitors to certain explicit Web sites are led to believe they're downloading a free video player when in fact they're installing malicious code onto their Macs. Once the user authorizes the transaction, the scammers can redirect future browsing to fraudulent Web sites and possibly steal passwords and other valuable information.
